SUMMARY:The 2016 Indigenous Knowledge Field Camp (IKFC)
DESCRIPTION:The IKFC is an indigenous cultural immersion experience to examine participant’s unique perceptions and beliefs in an effort to recognize the intersections of Native Traditional Knowledge and Western science through a three-day experience on traditional Nez Perce land\, including the Salmon River. Activities will provide opportunities for increased cross-cultural understanding through presentations\, talks\, and individual exploration of stories on Traditional practices and ways of knowing. \nSelected faculty and Native student pairs will examine their perceptions and beliefs in western science and Indigenous Traditional Knowledge. The experience will expose participants to traditional Nez Perce lands\, current tribal STEM related programs and new ways to re-think STEM research conducted in universities by faculty and Native and non–Native students. The Indigenous Knowledge Field Camp is available to Native American and Alaska Native students and their faculty mentor. \nAugust 8 – arrive in Moscow\, dinner and camp overview – lodge at Best Western \nAugust 9 — leave early go to Spalding and then to the Tribal Fish Hatchery (hopefully with Aaron again)\, go to Winchester that evening. TeePee set up with James Walker\, Tatlo on seasonal Rounds and language. \nAugust 10 – Morning Josiah on storytelling and Nez Perce traditions.  Allan Pinkham on the Nez Perce war and history – after lunch go to river – Launch for short day on river. \nAugust 11 – Full river day \nAugust 12 – River day in morning – off river by noon – Final words from Josiah on the importance of water and land –  back to Moscow by 3:30. \n  \nContact Jerry McMurtry at mcmurtry@uidaho.edu for more information.
