A manual check with a keyboard and screen reader is necessary for the audio and video player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Definitions<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Audio-only<\/strong> content contains only sound, such as podcasts, audiobooks, and music.<\/li><li><strong>Video-only <\/strong>is a video without voice or sound, such as a silent movie or animation, or videos with text or animations only.<\/li><li><strong>Multimedia<\/strong> is video containing audio (voice and sound), such as movies and how-to videos with narration.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Accessibility requirements<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Audio-only <strong>must<\/strong> have a transcript.<\/li><li>Video-only <strong>must<\/strong> have an audio description for the visual content. It may have a transcript.<\/li><li>Multimedia <strong>must<\/strong> include&nbsp;<em>synchronized<\/em>&nbsp;captions and an audio description for visual content that is not supported by audio. It <strong>should<\/strong> have a transcript.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>Audio and Video Players<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Audio and video players <strong>must<\/strong> be accessible for assistive technology. The player&#8217;s controls let you pause, play, and mute audio or video.  Each control on the player <strong>must<\/strong> have a visual focus indicator, be in a logical order, and function with the keyboard and other assistive devices. Each control <strong>must<\/strong> have the correct information (name (label), role, and value) to be accessible to screen readers and other assistive devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"audio-description\">Audio Descriptions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Multimedia <strong>must<\/strong> have an audio description for this visual content that is not supported through the audio (sound or spoken words). Video-only <strong>must<\/strong> have an audio description. It may provide a transcript for the visual content. An audio description is an explanation of the visual content happening in the video that isn&#8217;t conveyed through audio (sound or spoken words). The captions are synchronized with the voice and sounds in the multimedia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Definitions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Closed captions<\/strong> are a separate file from the video. The separate file works with the video player, allowing you to control the captions by adjusting their size or color, or turn them on or off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Open captions<\/strong> are captions embedded in the video that you cannot adjust in size or color, or turn on or off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Visual Presentation of Captions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you are using Closed or Open Closed Captions, follow these guidelines:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Captions <strong>should<\/strong> be less than 3 lines and less than 32 characters per line<ul><li>Use logical breaks in phrases for line breaks<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>For captions, the color contrast between text and background <strong>must<\/strong> be a contrast ratio of 3:1<br>Best practice: Use white text on a black background.<\/li><li>Captions <strong>must not<\/strong> rely solely on colors to express meaning.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The font <strong>should<\/strong> be a sans-serif type.<\/li><li>Font size<strong> should<\/strong> be at least 22pt font (29px)<\/li><li>Captions <strong>should<\/strong> be in mixed case.<ul><li>Use italics and ALL CAPS for emphasis when punctuation alone does not express the intended meaning. Apply them thoughtfully and sparingly.<\/li><li>Quotation marks, italics, or underlining with mixed case capitalization should be used to convey titles of books, movies, and songs.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Avoid blocking visual information, including text and people\u2019s faces.<br>For video players like YouTube and Vimeo, captions appear only at the bottom of the screen.&nbsp;<ul><li>Identify where the visual information appears on the screen to avoid covering text with captions.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Captions <strong>should<\/strong> sync with the audio<ul><li>Captions <strong>should<\/strong> remain on screen for at least 1 second.<ul><li>Ideally, it is at least 0.3 seconds per word<\/li><li>Add extra time for a caption to stay on frame when there are unfamiliar words or when a lot is happening visually.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Captions <strong>should not<\/strong> appear on the screen during long silent intervals.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-cta \" >\n\t<a \t\t\t\t\thref=\"#best-practices\"\t\n\t\tclass=\"wsu-button  wsu-button--style-outline\">\n\t\t\t\n\t\tMore details about captions below\t\t\t<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>Transcripts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A transcript <strong>must<\/strong> be available for <em>audio-only<\/em> and <strong>should<\/strong> be available for <em>multimedia<\/em>. A transcript <strong>must<\/strong> be available for <em>video-only<\/em> if audio description is not available.
