Alerts&nbsp;<strong>should<\/strong>&nbsp;be fixed. These fixes, both errors and alerts, improve the accessibility and usability of the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Practice<\/strong>:&nbsp;Using concise, descriptive, and meaningful link text enables people to understand the link&#8217;s destination or function. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Assistive technology<\/strong>: Assistive technology, such as screen readers, can list all the links on the web page, allowing people to read the link text out of context. Ambiguous and sometimes redundant link text hinders people from selecting the right link. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<section  class=\"wsu-section  wsu-color-background--white\"  >\r\n        \n\n<h2>Concise, Descriptive, Meaningful Link Text<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3>Ambiguous Link Text<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambiguous link text doesn&#8217;t provide enough information to know the link&#8217;s destination or function. The surrounding text may provide clues. When taken out of context, people know where the link will take them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Redundant Link Text<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Redundant link text is the <strong>same link text<\/strong> with the <strong>same destination<\/strong>.  Depending on context, it may be redundant to include both links. An accessibility checker may note redundant link text, but its proximity to each other may or may not warrant the redundant link indication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Ambiguous Redundant Link Text<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>same link text,<\/strong> but to a <strong><em>different<\/em> destination,<\/strong> is ambiguous and redundant. People would expect the same link to take them to the same destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Example<\/strong><\/em>: The same text is going to two different locations, Washington State University and the Campuses web page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/\">Washington State University<\/a> is a public research university dedicated to improving lives by serving the public good.  Our&nbsp;<strong>six campuses<\/strong>&nbsp;at <a href=\"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/campuses\/\">Washington State University<\/a> provide outstanding learning opportunities\u2014and each offers its own distinct student environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Error Type<\/strong>: Alert (although WAVE will not catch this one.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Practice<\/strong>: Ensure that link text to different destinations is not the same link text. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>URL Link Text<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Example<\/em><\/strong>: This link text is the URL. Assistive technology would output, &#8220;H T T P  slash slash you to be slash S F E U K I N 7 Q  S I equals H B Y 4 Z J R D Y R V K 4 P K&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The assistive technology does not read the colon, period, underscore, dash, or question mark. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to write better link text: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/_SfEUKlN-7Q?si=Hby4zjrdY-RVK4Pk\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/_SfEUKlN-7Q?si=Hby4zjrdY-RVK4Pk<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Error<\/strong>: Alert<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Practices<\/strong>: Short URLs, like soemthing.wsu.edu or go.wsu.edu\/something provide succinct information without the URL protocol (https:\/\/) to draw out assistive technology reading the link text. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Links to Documents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Including the electronic document type within the link text helps everyone know more about the link&#8217;s destination or function. The document type information within the link helps everyone know the document type and expected behavior of the link.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Example<\/em><\/strong>: You can not tell that the following link is to a PDF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/digital-accessibility\/documents\/2023\/10\/core-concept-check-sheet.pdf\" data-type=\"document\" data-id=\"655\">Core Concepts Check sheet<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Error Type<\/strong>: Alert<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Practice<\/strong>: Include the document type within the link text to let everyone know the document type. Regularly check web pages for broken and bad links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Example<\/em><\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>empty link text: <a href=\"https:\/\/web.wsu.edu\/web-training\/resources\/launching-a-website\/checking-links\/\">  <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#somewhere\">Skip Links (Broken)<\/a> (Usually these are link that jump to the navigation or main content.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#broken-same-page-link\">broken same page link (jump links)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Error<\/strong>: Errors and Alerts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Practice<\/strong>: Check links frequently for broken and bad links. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Link Checkers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selectorshub.com\/checkmylinks\/\">Check my Links<\/a>: Available for Chrome and Edge<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/webextension.org\/listing\/broken-link-checker.html\">Broken Link Checker<\/a>: Chrome, Edge, and FireFox<\/p>\n\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<section  class=\"wsu-section  wsu-color-background--white\"  >\r\n        \n\n<h2>Opens in a New Tab<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to let people know the link will open into a new tab. Assistive technology will not indicate a link has opened in a new tab. For people using assistive technology, they must discover the link opened into a new tab, then take the extra steps to return to the previous web page. There are several options in CSS to indicate that a link opens in a new tab. Or, let everyone know that the link opens in a new tab.  <\/p>\n\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<section  class=\"wsu-section  wsu-color-background--white\"  >\r\n        \n\n<h2>Underlined Text<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are requirements for how link text is visually distinguishable from other text. It is important to reserve underline for only linked text. When people see underlined text, it is implied that it is linked text. People are more likely to think the color or other styling for the link is missing than that the underlined text is not a link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Example<\/em><\/strong>:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><u>Not a link<\/u><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/techniques\/hypertext\/link_text#appearance\">Link Appearance: Underlining<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Error<\/strong>: Alert<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Practice<\/strong>: Do not underline text. Reserve the underline decoration for the link only. <\/p>\n\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<section  class=\"wsu-section  wsu-color-background--white\"  >\r\n        \n\n<h2>ARIA and Link Text<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>ARIA is a way to supplement web applications to make them more accessible.
