Alerts <strong>should<\/strong> be fixed. These fixes, both errors and alerts, improve the accessibility and usability of the content. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Practice<\/strong>: Use a hierarchical sequence of headings. Headings provide an outline of your content. It enables people to navigate to the information they seek by scanning a web page or digital document, or using assistive technology to extract headings or navigate by headings.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--single\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Missing Heading 1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The missing heading 1 is an alert. A Heading 1 helps identify the page topic for people and search engines. This alert should be fixed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Notice<\/strong>: At the top of the web page, the breadcrumb does not include this page because this web page is missing the page title\/heading 1. Adding a page title block does not solve the breadcrumb issue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Error Type<\/strong>: Alert<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Practice<\/strong>: Each web page or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/digital-accessibility\/get-started\/glossary\/electronic-document\/\">electronic document<\/a>&nbsp;should have one heading level 1 that represents the main topic of the digital document. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Missing Page Title<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the web page is missing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3schools.com\/tags\/tag_title.asp\">title tag<\/a>, it is an error and must be fixed. A web page must have a meaningful page title. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WordPress<\/strong>: In WordPress, the page or post title (Add title) of a web page supplies the heading 1 and the document title for the web page. Leaving the page or post title\/heading 1 empty, like this web page, or only adding a Heading block with an H1 to a page, does not populate the document title. If it were a heading 1, it would override the missing page title\/heading 1 at the top of the page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pages should only have one heading 1. A Heading 1 should begin the main content of the web page. This allows assistive technology to easily jump to the beginning of the content (the heading 1) on the web page. This alert should be fixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Error Type<\/strong>: Alert<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Practice<\/strong>: Do not skip down in heading levels.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--single\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an empty heading block between this sentence and the previous sentence. Missing headings are errors and <strong>must<\/strong> be fixed. Wave will identify the heading level and the missing heading. WAVE and Web Developer (Browser Add-on) will catch this issue. This error must be fixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Error Type<\/strong>: Error<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Best Practice<\/strong>: Remove empty headings. People using assistive technology will be alerted to empty headings, which could be confusing.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--single\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<p class=\"wsu-font-size--xlarge\"><strong>Heading 2? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This heading above is intentionally styled to look like a heading. The application formatting tool, like WordPress&#8217;s Heading block, was not used to create this text. Not all automatic accessibility checkers will catch that this could be a heading. If the bold text is part of the content&#8217;s organization, then it should be fixed with the appropriate formatting tools. This is a manual check. Assistive technology can list the headings for people, allowing them to easily navigate to the content. The heading for this section of content is long and disruptive to the flow of the heading list. In the Document Overview, the List view tab will be open. Select the next tab,&nbsp;Outline.&nbsp; It will show heading structure except for the missing Heading 1. <br><strong>Note<\/strong>: In WordPress themes WDS 2 and WDS 3, this tool does not identify headings in accordions.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/wave.webaim.org\/\"><strong>WAVE<\/strong> (website)<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wave.webaim.org\/extension\/\">browser extensions<\/a>: This is a full-page accessibility automatic check. In the Summary pane is the&nbsp;Structure&nbsp;tab with the heading structure. It also contains the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3schools.com\/accessibility\/accessibility_landmarks.php\">Accessibility Landmarks<\/a>. <ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.pope.tech\/2022\/08\/04\/accessible-headings-training-resources\/#:~:text=Heading%20result%20documentation\">Wave: Heading result documentation<\/a>: These are the WAVE results associated with headings.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/chrispederick.com\/work\/web-developer\/\"><strong>Web Developer<\/strong> (Browser Add-on)<\/a>: This browser extension features an&nbsp;<strong>Information<\/strong>&nbsp;tab with&nbsp;a&nbsp;<strong>View Document Outline<\/strong>&nbsp;option. The Document Outline opens in a new tab with the heading structure of the website.<\/li><li><strong>HeadingsMap (Browser Add-on: Chrome,&nbsp;Edge,&nbsp;Firefox)<\/strong>: This browser extension does not check empty headings by default. You must check to include it as an option. Select the&nbsp;<strong>3 dots<\/strong>&nbsp;in the top bar, then <strong>settings<\/strong>. In the&nbsp;Configuration&nbsp;dialog box settings, select the&nbsp;<strong>Headers structure<\/strong>&nbsp;tab, check the box for&nbsp;<strong>Consider empty headings<\/strong>. <br><strong>Note<\/strong>: This tool will display the headings within a WordPress Accordion block when the accordion is open.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to check non-web page based digital content? Can your headings navigate people to the right street or the information they seek? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Headings help guide people to the information they seek. If they don&#8217;t see the heading or can not interpret the heading to be what they are seeking, then people might leave to find the information somewhere else or become frustrated with having to work to get the information. For people using assistive technology, this adds an greater level of frustration as they sift through the content to find their answer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These questions can help you decide if the content needs a restructuring of headings to represent the content, if it needs a heading, or if it is even a heading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Does the heading structure outline the content and its relationship to other content? <ul><li>Is it hierarchical?<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Can headings be added to help identify specific paragraph topics? <ul><li>Are there information gaps in the outline of the content?<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Does the heading identify the topic of the content below?<\/li><li>Is there content that needs a heading to represent the topic?<\/li><li>Is a heading used to make text stand out?
