{"id":18,"date":"2023-01-07T08:00:34","date_gmt":"2023-01-07T16:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/digital-accessibility\/?page_id=18"},"modified":"2025-12-04T10:43:24","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T18:43:24","slug":"audio-video","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/digital-accessibility\/core-concepts\/audio-video\/","title":{"rendered":"Audio and Video"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--single\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<h2 id=\"importance-of-transcripts-and-captions\">Importance of Transcripts and Captions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Audio and video media are frequently used to deliver content digitally in web pages, presentations, social media, online textbooks, online courses, advertisements, virtual live events, etc. Audio and video media delivery options include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Audio only:<\/strong> For example, podcasts, spoken feedback, radio programs, etc.<\/li><li><strong>Video synchronized with audio (i.e., multimedia):<\/strong> For example, commercials, movies, television programs, livestreamed graduation, virtual conference, narrated PowerPoint lecture, etc.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Audio and video media need alternatives to allow people with varying abilities equal access to the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Audio only content needs transcripts. Videos with audio (pre-recorded and live) need captioning. Audio descriptions are also needed for videos that have meaningful information that is only provided visually and is not described\/supported by audio content. Additionally, audio or video media player controls need to be accessible.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--single\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<h3 id=\"audio-and-video-alternatives\">Audio and Video Alternatives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Transcript: <\/strong>A separate, non-synchronized, verbatim, text version of a media\u2019s spoken audio content. people (e.g., deaf, hard of hearing, blind, English-language learners, etc.).<\/li><li>Provides an alternative and supplementary option for accessing the video and audio only content.<\/li><li>Improve search engine optimization because captions and transcript text are available.<\/li><li>Aids in comprehension and processing of the media content.<\/li><li>Allows audio to be accessed and videos to be watched in a quiet environment or in an environment where audio is difficult to hear.<\/li><li>Makes videos more searchable, interactive, and engaging.<\/li><li>Aids in translation and the creation of content.<\/li><li>Speaker changes are identified.<\/li><li>Transcripts must be verbatim with the audio content.<\/li><li>Transcripts should be accurate and in the same sequence as the auditory content.<\/li><li>Transcripts are provided in the same language as the spoken language.<\/li><li>Transcripts should be provided alongside the audio only content.<\/li><li>Consider including transcripts, as a supplemental source, along with captioned videos.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"captions-best-practices\">Captions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wsu-list--style-arrow\"><li>Captions are provided for pre-recorded and live videos that have audio.<\/li><li>Speaker changes are identified.<\/li><li>Captions should be synchronized, with little to no delay, with the auditory content.<\/li><li>Captions are provided in the same language as the spoken language.<\/li><li>Captions must be verbatim with the audio content.<\/li><li>Captions should be accurate and in the same sequence as the auditory content.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"audio-descriptions-best-practices\">Audio Descriptions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wsu-list--style-arrow\"><li>Audio descriptions are provided for pre-recorded videos that have meaningful information that is only provided visually and is not described\/supported by audio content (e.g., speech and non-speech sounds).<\/li><li>Audio descriptions are provided between the spoken dialogue.<\/li><li>Videos should be modified to allow audio descriptions when natural pauses do not occur or are too short.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"media-player-best-practices\">Media Player<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wsu-list--style-arrow\"><li>Video or audio player controls must be available or accessible with a keyboard and <a href=\"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/digital-accessibility\/get-started\/glossary\/assistive-technology\/\">assistive technology<\/a>.<\/li><li>Avoid having media content start automatically because it can interfere with a person\u2019s ability to hear assistive technology.
