| Putting Together Contrast and Representation |
In the last two assignments, we've been working entirely on looking at the world through the eyes of other cultures; these assignments have concerned representation, or how world view is imposed on what a culture sees or hears. Now let's put our understanding of representation together with other critical skills we've learned, particularly contrastive analysis.
On this assignment, I want you to do some web research on either Hindu and Indian Buddhist visual art or Hindu and Buddhist music. That is, I want you to find representations from these two world views and publish them side by side in your submission. These images should, in many ways, be similar: either they should be about the same topic, or they should be similar in their visual form. Below these images, I want you to explain the differences between them. In making this argument, you will do three things. First, you'll describe the physical differences that you find between the two representations. Second, in one, maybe two, paragraphs, you'll define how the primary texts you've read help explain each representation. Third, you'll then explain how these primary texts help explain the differences that you're finding. |
| Grading | You'll be graded on both your selection of representations and on your essay. Your representation selection will be graded by how well the two pictures go together. Are there enough similarities so that one can see them as closely related? Are there differences which stand out and invite interpretation? Your essay will be graded on how well you use your explanation of the primary texts to explain what you're seeing visually and how well the two parts of your argument come together in the final paragraph of your essay. |
