The competition honors and recognizes outstanding achievements in journalism by high school students. Nearly 100 entries were submitted in 2004.

The top students in each category were honored April 14 at the Murrow Symposium Career Day lunch on the Washington State campus. First place finishers received a certificate and a $50 gift voucher from the Bookie, the WSU Students Book Corporation. Certificates were presented to second and third place and honorable mention students.

The first place winners and their advisors were also guests of the University and recognized at the Murrow Symposium Scholarship Banquet. Plaques were presented to the five winning high schools at the banquet.

The competition is a new component of the Murrow Symposium, a longstanding event organized by Washington State's Edward R. Murrow College of Communication to acknowledge exceptional achievement in communication, celebrate scholarship, and connect students to industry professionals.
